The verdant countryside of the Shenandoah Valley is one of the most beautiful landscapes in the United States. We will spend the day exploring its history and bounty in and around Winchester, Virginia. Our day will begin with the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley – comprised of 7 acres of formal gardens, a museum with four gallery spaces that detail Valley history, European & American fine and decorative arts, a miniatures collection, and special exhibitions, as well as the circa 1794 Glen Burnie house. We will enjoy guided tours of the museum and gardens, and then head to historic old town Winchester for lunch. Old town has a plethora of restaurant options, from farm to table, Jamaican, French, and beyond —choose what you’d like to savor and enjoy the historic architecture. After lunch, we will visit award-winning Valerie Vineyards, which produces Bordeaux-style vintages that you can enjoy in their circa 1807 Federalist style manor, set on 18 lush acres of beautiful Shenandoah Valley countryside. Savor art, history, gardens, and wine on this lovely excursion.

Please Note: This tour involves moderate walking while on a guided museum tour. Lunch will be on your own at the restaurant of your choice in downtown Winchester. Wine tasting fee is not included in the course fee but can be purchased on your own. No refunds after close of business on May 29, 2020.

Instructor: Christine Rai
Christine Rai is an assistant professor of English at FCC with a passion for food studies and experiential learning. An FCC alum, Professor Rai earned a Bachelor’s from Towson University and her Master’s from Loyola College. As an educator she is known for incorporating active learning including field trips, service learning, and cultural cooking demonstrations. Inspired by her love of travel, she designed a global scholar course and led an FCC group abroad to France in May 2016. She writes about teaching, traveling, and food at christinerai.com.
